Incline Push-Ups for Beginners

An incline push-up is a normal push-up with your hands raised on a stable surface, which cuts how much of your body weight your arms have to lift. Lower the surface a little each time you improve, until your hands reach the floor.

What an incline push-up actually is

Hands go on something raised, feet stay on the floor, and everything else about the push-up stays the same: straight body line from head to heels, chest moving toward the surface, elbows locking out at the top. The only variable is height. A kitchen counter is an easy incline. A yoga block or a low step is a hard one. Between those two extremes is a smooth ramp you can walk down as you get stronger, which is the main reason incline push-ups are more useful for beginners than knee push-ups alone: a bench has more available heights than your knees do.

Why raising your hands makes it easier

The mechanism is simple leverage. Raising your hands shifts more of your body weight toward your feet, so your arms move less of it. Research measuring this directly found that a standard floor push-up loads the arms with roughly two thirds of body mass, while raising the hands to about knee height cuts that closer to two fifths. The higher the incline, the smaller that fraction gets. A push-up against a wall, the extreme end of the incline, loads the arms with only a small fraction of body weight, which is why it works as a true starting point and an incline push-up works as the step after it.

Setting up the movement

Place your hands on the raised surface at shoulder width, fingers pointing forward. Walk your feet back until your body forms one straight line from head to heels, hips level with that line, not sagging toward the floor or piked into the air. Lower your chest toward the edge of the surface, elbows travelling back at roughly a 45 degree angle rather than flaring straight out, then press back up to a full elbow lockout.

A common mistake is standing too close to the surface, which shortens the range of motion and lets the hips do work the arms should be doing. Feet further back means more of your body weight is in the lowered position, which is exactly the resistance you are training for.

Choosing your height and moving down

Start at a height where you can do a full set with the same form you would want on the floor: straight line, full range, controlled tempo. If your best set is only two or three shaky reps, the surface is too low; raise it. If a set is easy enough that your last reps look identical to your first, the surface is too high for training gains and it is time to lower it.

Move down in small steps rather than large ones. A kitchen counter to a dining table is a big jump for someone new to the movement; a table to a low bench is a more even one. Track the surface you used and the reps you got, since that record is what tells you whether the last change was too big to hold your form.

Where this leads

Keep lowering the surface and the incline push-up eventually becomes a floor push-up, at which point the height variable disappears and reps and sets become the only thing left to progress. What surface should I use for incline push-ups?

Anything sturdy that will not slide: a bench, a low table, stairs, a loaded barbell rack. Avoid anything that rocks or has any give, since an unstable base changes the exercise into a balance drill instead of a strength one.

Are incline push-ups easier than knee push-ups?
